What Is Forex Trading and How Does It Work? (Beginner's Guide)

When I first heard about Forex trading, I thought it was something only bankers or rich guys did. But the truth is, Forex is for anyone — including you reading this right now.

Let me walk you through what Forex trading really means, how it works, and share my first experience with it as a beginner trader from Nigeria.

💱 What Is Forex Trading?

Forex (short for “foreign exchange”) is the global marketplace where currencies are exchanged. You’ve technically “traded Forex” if you’ve ever exchanged Naira to Dollars or Pounds at an airport.

But in online Forex trading, you're doing this digitally — buying one currency while selling another — hoping the exchange rate changes in your favor.

Example: If you trade the pair EUR/USD, you’re buying Euros while selling US Dollars. If the Euro goes up, you profit.

⚙️ How Forex Trading Works

  1. Select a Currency Pair: For example, GBP/JPY
  2. Place a Trade: You “buy” if you think the Pound will go up.
  3. Watch Price Move: If the market moves in your favor, you gain.
  4. Close the Trade: Lock in your profits or cut your losses.

It sounds simple — but it takes discipline and knowledge to succeed.

📉 My First Forex Trade (True Story)

Back in 2022, I opened a demo account with $100,000. My first trade was GBP/JPY. I made over $700 in a few hours and thought, “This is easy money!”

But the next week, I lost it all. I was right about the direction, but still lost because I had no real strategy or risk management.

Lesson? Forex isn’t gambling. You need to study it like a skill.
